–BETWEEN GOOD EDUCATION AND FREE EDUCATION: IHEDIOHA TEACHES OKOROCHA THE WAY
By Onwuasoanya FCC Jones
The only thing Okorocha’s apologists have continued to hang onto in their weak defense of Owelle Rochas Okorocha’s inexcusable maladministration is the cheap lie of a ‘free’ education from Primary to Tertiary education. While, it is a reality that there is no State government funded FREE education in Imo State, I will for the benefit of this short write-up assume that there is a free education in Imo State, and posit most confidently that such education is mal-education.
Parents and guardians who appreciate good education have continued to withdraw their wards en mass from public schools in the State, due to what a majority of them have tagged the ”FREE NONSENSE”. It is no news that due to our Governor’s penchant for showmanship, he has regrettably neglected the basic infrastructures necessary for qualitative education and gone ahead to invest in cosmetics and window dressing, while our children lag dangerously behind in the real requisites of good education.
It is no longer news that due to Okorocha’s misplaced and ill-advised educational policies, Imo State has crashed from its enviable prime position to a dull average echelon, while our university students have continued to lose their worth and ratings in threatening plunges.
It is in recognition of this unfortunate reality and in a bid to salvage our educational system and protect the future of our children, that the Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Chukwuemeka Nkem Ihedioha, took the bull by the horns and responded in unprecedented audacity to ensure that our State returns to its best heights in education.
It would have meant little, if he looked the other way, but as a responsible leader, who understands the importance of education in a society’s growth and grace, he has decided to take drastic actions for the betterment of our children’s future. It may not even be politically wise, but it is undoubtedly the best investment he can make for our future’s brightness.
Emeka Ihedioha’s decision to donate science equipment to select secondary schools across the 27 LGAs of the State is one of the best things that any politician has done in recent times for this State. The idea of making sure that all categories of schools benefited from this largesse is also a confirmation of the fact that Ihedioha is a prepared leader who knows how to carry everybody along.
About 43 government run schools are in the list of those to benefit from this largesse and it goes to defeat any blackmail that he might be doing this in order to mop up support for his governorship campaign. Of course, government schools are the Governor’s strongholds and it will be foolhardy to anticipate any form of serious support from them. If the Deputy Speaker was so keen on using this opportunity to mop up his popularity among the people, he would have focused on private and missionary schools, where the proprietors and administrators may be influenced to tilt their support to his governorship ambition. But, he did not do that, because beyond every other thing, HE THINKS THE FUTURE OF OUR DEAR STATE. It matters more to him that our children get the best education possible.
IMO GA ADI MMA OZO!
